Removal of natural organic matter by ion exchange: Comparing regenerated and non-regenerated columns

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water has adverse impacts on the treatment process and is effectively removed by ion exchange (IEX). Some researchers have proposed term biological (BIEX) for of continuous DOM removal without need chemical regeneration that results brine waste. Surface with moderate dissolved carbon (DOC) concentrations (4–6 mg/L) high sulfate (80 – 120 was fed to two regenerated non-regenerated columns 12,500 bed volumes (9 months) goal investigating effects possibly long-term IEX operation. Chemically achieved between 60 80% DOC entirety experiment, while steady ~50%. Inorganic analysis showed activity had minimal impact removal, main mechanism secondary (SO42−) fractions affinities exchange. Fluorescence specific UV absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA 254) data higher SUVA values (terrestrial-like fractions) were better than those lower (aquatic/microbial-like fractions). Scanning electron microscopy biofilms resins covered 5–15% resin surface are composed numerous species bacteria varying functions, some protozoa present.
